You may wonder why a animated superhero show has made this list. Well, this thing is full of horror! Thieving ghosts, graveyard, rituals, a vengeful, launch Chaney ask killer rampaging through a film studio A child snatcher , Spooky carnivals and energy draining vampire!




And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Other characters from Batman’s rogues gallery are given a dark makeover in most of which have 1 foot in the spooky the original Batman the animated series is one of my favorite television shows of all time, and that’s being diplomatic most days I say it is my favorite television show of all time So needless to say, I was excited to see a lot of these people come together again, and add some dream creators to the production

The Good… The Bad …and the Spooky 


The good


There is the perfect blend of dick, Sprague, Bob Kane style art, giving the show incredible mix of hard-boiled noir crime Mystery mixed in with a heaping dose of horror.


No one can ever replace my favorite Batman, or my favorite voice, but Hamish Linklater is doing a damn fine job. I like the betrayal of the fact that there is nothing charming about Bruce Wayne’s vengeful obsession. He is mono myopic enough to be both a dick, and very very fallible.


Every single villain in the show hits the mark with maybe the exception of one, but otherwise, I think they stuck the landing


The gender switch of the penguin is a very interesting choice. They managed to do a femme fatale by way of pin Up but still managed to pull off the traditional penguin façade… First defects? Mutations? Bazaar familial biological characteristics? Aside from the strange mutant by Danny DeVito, I’ve never really put much thought into why the penguin looks like the penguin. It doesn’t hurt that mini driver destroys this role!


There are quite a few characters who are either gonna be Easter eggs or stories for the future. Seeing Jack Rider, Floyd, Lawton and Jim Corrigan (The last two voiced With a Subtle and great vocal performance by Roger Craig Smith) Inhabit this dark, shadowy city was super rad





The bad 


The animation is a little… Stiff. It lacks the elegance of the original BTA


I was excited when I found out that Christina Ricci was voicing cat woman. And while I understand the trope of the airheaded glamour girl of yesteryear film, and I understand the boy crazy Bond girl thing Cat woman is one of my favorites, and I would’ve liked more femme fatale, and less cliché


Onomatopoeia is sort of Boba Fetted out. His one on one with the dark Knight is a pretty good throwdown, but he’s just so cool he should’ve got more


I know this is a super nerdy thing and hopefully he’s more than an Easter egg and doesn’t end up doing more but Floyd Lawton, who is one of my favorite characters of all time deserves more than a afterthought… I realize this is a nerdy rant But it’s my nerdy rant, and I’m sticking to it





The spooky 





I always find Child monsters a bit scary. This show has a good one. I think this is one of the best portrayals of two face in a long time both visually and psychologically. I didn’t like the way his face looked when I saw promotional stuff but in the show it really works. It just looks wrong. In an uncanny Valley sort of way. It really stuck with me.


Honestly the over a;; tone of this owes as much or more to Gaines as to Kane

The Death Rattle






This is great! A lot that I love about BMTAS and a new Dark sophistication that I’m just eating up. I really recommend this and think you should make time for this spooky season, but if it is not horror enough for your horror viewing, you should click it on November 1. The show is one part Val Lewton One part Coen brothersn One part classic Noah, one part 70s Neil Adams Batman one part ec comics all parts. Awesome.


I hope there’s another season, because the stinger at the end of the last episode was super obvious, but so effectively done it put a chill down my spine and a smile on my face.
