The Good… The Bad …and the Spooky

The good

This thing does the throw back thing right. It has some of the dumb film grain. But without it I wouldn’t be 100% sure when this odd ball cam from!

The character design in this movie ranges from subtle to outrageous but I feel like both levels are that have characters that are super memorable and verging on on on iconic

I’ve seen Emily sweeten some movies that aren’t very good and I don’t think she was very good in them but she was fucking awesome in this!

There are not a lot of death scenes in this movie, but the couple that there are Are brutal and shot incredibly.

I normally find xenophobia to be sort of low hanging fruit, but Serbia as shot in this movie is a terrifying landscape. They capture. The war, torn urban alleys in apartments, in a way that look more like a post apocalyptic dystopian future than a part of the world that exist. In the same reality we do..

It’s the little things… While there are some supernatural machinations behind it, this, perhaps has the most realistic cinematic representation of a migraine I’ve ever seen

Bruno Veljanovski is a terrifying treat.

The almost “Found footage“ element of this creation really work!

It adds to both the paranoia and a real life predatory streak that is both a worldly and tragically real

Normally, silly, psychedelic shenanigans would turn me off, but in this case, they are used so effectively that it adds to the strange, alternate reality cinema that this movie lives in

The scene with mother is so imagtive and just great

The bad

There is some film grain  and pops it’s better then the grind house revive stuff that poked up in the wake of well “grind hous” but  film gr Weather, digital effects or some sort of  neat natural technique Date the movie… not in a specific time but… in anytime at all. Otherwise, this film exists best in some ambiguous time in some alternate timeline

The last five or so, minutes are pretty anticlimactic

The spooky

Saint Peter is fuckign scary!

Another 2023 flick that uses awkward social dynamics to effectively ratchet up the tension

Holy shit. Male nudity obviously doesn’t bother me Buuuut a heavy set naked dood Blubbering like  a Serbian leather face wearing a wax baby face mask! Well that shit and its tiny penis can fuck right off!! Wax baby Scary!!!

There is a scene when a character is reviewing film, edited together that they stumbled upon, and it is very unsettling and very effective

πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Sinister superlatives

Best kill: double head smash

Best Scare: Saint peter’s factory scolding

Best : actor Bruno Veljanovski (but Emily, Sweet is pretty great too)

Best character: Saint Peter

Best quote: you want to see real Serbia

The Death Rattle

I hope vinegar syndrome makes a lot more movies because it would be cool if my favorite boutique label was also my favorite film producers. This movie is inevitably going to be called “the Serbian chainsaw massacre ( MASKacre… Im so clever ) But honestly, that is minimizing the coolness of this movie definitely seek it out

****3/4

Wold I buy it? Yes becuse it’s vin syn (and they are the best) but its not an easy watch its great but its a rough watch.
