The Dark secrets of 80’d suburbia are spilled into the streets as it ends of a dark dimension, stalk neighborhood of a small New England town. As trick or treaters Halloween parties and haunted mazes are overtaken with human drama and and inhuman monsters.

I knew this author existed. I was a big fan of a defenders podcast he did with Brian Keene (a fave of mine). I was also familiar with, but hadn’t read any of his comic work. surprisingly, I haven’t even checked out the stuff that he had done with Mike Mignola
I I’m always looking for a good Halloween time read so let’s do this!!

The Good… The Bad …and the Spooky
The good
I’m obsessed with the darkness behind the Idealic suburbs.
This books covers the one of my obsessions, the dark underbelly of the burbs. The lies, despair, the evil the pretense of the American dream the reality of being swallowed by the lie. The monsters that hide in plain sight Camouflaged in polite neighborly camaraderie.
I love so many of the characters in this book. These kids seem like real teenagers. These kids seem like kids I knew growing up. it also captures how weird and awful adults seam to kids.
The mythology Golden builds is as good or better then any thing any one else I’ve read in along time.its really great
the violence is really visceral. It make the super natural tinged mayhem seam more real
John Butler and January LaVoy, are great
Maybe I’m a goddamn eight-year-old but I got quite a kick out of hearing all these familiar local things I grew up around.
The bad
There is very dark couple in this book with very dark predatory habits . This diversion works in the sense i spoke of before It’s evil hiding behind the veneer of the suburban tranquility. It also works mechanically in regards to how it moves the plot. It works to develop some characters. I cant say it doesn’t work. But it’s just a subject matter that’s too dark for me.
The bad guys have a repeated interaction with the towns folk that by the last time it happens feels like an instant replay.
The spooky
the Cunning Man is scary!!! His eyes his weird aloof interactions. The way he absorbed A character and exist inside him in an almost parasitic way what a great character.
The mysterious children in this story are super fucking spooky. The pale skin, the old costumes their attitudes that change on a dime.
I like how The evil literally begins to corrupt and morphed the neighborhood turning familiar areas and landmarks into distorted nightmares.
This book fits in with a lot of contemporary horror cinema in the sense that there are parts that awkward human interaction is a scary is any supernatural stuff?

The Death Rattle
This book is pretty fucking rad. Im going to track down more Of Mr Golden’s work! Id be a liar, liar pants on fire if I said he didn’t have me at “Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts” but tickling my 80s fetish and my suburban apocalypse, picadillo aside this book succeeds where many that draw from the same playbook don’t, and honestly where it doesn’t stick the landing Said literary kinks, definitely gloss over the imperfections. I recommend this book to anyone that loves Halloween anyone that loves 80s stuff and anyone that grew up in Massachusetts which is truly the greatest place to be at this time of year.
What doodles thought: she loves cuddling and listing to books!

Would I buy it? I’ve already added it to my Amazon wish list and can see myself creating a shelf for Mr. Golden alongside my Jonathan, Mayberry F, Paul Wilson, and Brian Keane shelves.
