Song of the week: somebody to shove

the song of the week!
I don’t really like Soul Asylum, but after years of subliminally, trying to steal the line
“In a world frozen over with over-exposure”
I have to admit to myself, I actually Dug 1992’s “someone to shove”
After I came to grips with my betrayal to my 80s, loving 90s hating sensibilities I Dug in.
First off the opening. Riff of this song is rad! Slick and artificial the complete antithesis of everything else that was going on in early grams 90 alternative radio. .
Wile David Pirner’s lyrical output is more mass than hit for my sensibilities this ditty has some truly alkaline Trio level of word play!
“You're a dream for insomniacs, prize in the Cracker Jacks
All the difference in the world is just a call away…”
This sort of stuff is like crack for me when it works and this song is full of that sort of stuff!
No one could accuse Mr. Pirner of not swinging for the fences at every musical at bat, but unfortunately his record shows he pings more off poetry’s pesky pole then out Knockong it out of Flansburg park.
“ nothing draws a crowd like a crowd” is both somehow extremely forced and outlandishly lazy. It Illustrates everything that falls on the wrong side of ridiculous in the scruffy Axl Rose, look-alikes Cannon.
Luckily, this jam suffers none of the lyrical indignities as “grave dancers Union’s” bigger hit. In fact it is it anomaly versus everything else I heard from Soul Asylum at the time. The lyrics are in vocative and mysterious. It’s great.
God dammit I like a Soul Asylum song!!!! get off my back even a broken clock is right twice a day!! And while I was just reminded, I haven’t heard them ALL their songs and I might like MORE then just this own. Yikes!
I fear that journey is indeed a runaway train one that I am on the wrong side of the speeding behemoth and the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t my new favorite band, But a grab bag of nonsense, yucky guitar tones that may hold some lyrical brilliant but I won’t survive the impact.
