Video made the video star: Ghost “ Jesus He knows me”
Video made the video star is an analysis of the beautiful fusion of words and moving pictures!
Ghost “ Jesus He knows me”
Tobias Forge takes a catchy albeit heavy-handed swing at the right’s appropriation of Christianity/Catholicism and the systematic evil and hypocrisy of the clergy with a cover of Genesis “ Jesus He knows me” .
“give me an amen, the Lord is coming for you, but he’s only coming if you give him what he wants”
The prolific powerhouse Ghost’s surprise Easter present follows the adventures of a celebrity evangelist as he and his hummer takes a tour of the seven deadly sins over the course of one wild night.
The Genesis song could’ve been written today and Ghost is the appropriate Heralds to re-deliver the bleak message. The original song is from 1992 in a direct response to the evangelistic antics of con people like Jim and Tammy Baker. The tweaks made by the modern Kings of horror rock make the already unfortunately timeless subject matter very personal to the year of 2023.
The video is pretty amazing.
We open on the afternoon sermon ending in the cliché, but true fear mongering extortion that’s part of almost every church experience, ranging from donation baskets to routing numbers.
“You have been defrocked”
The statement is said, without context, but it comes with all the disgusting baggage the clergy lugs around with it
From there, We take debaucherus post sermon, adventure, Drugs, sex , indulgence, evil music, more drugs…and clowns are all on display.
There could be a knee-jerk reaction to believe that video is kink shaming on people who enjoy some of the activities on display. The villains sin party makes certain fringe recreational activities Look bad. It’s not about the orgies or drugs… Or even the clowns. the story here is the hypocrisy and public hatred of any person and or activity that doesn’t fall in step the antiquated values that the collar clad salesman is pushing. The lyrics and video are judging the lies not the behavior.
The closing of the video shows a next day a photo shoot montage of the priest, peacocking through all his rockstar fantasy, all the while, pushing the conservative agenda. This is interwoven with a group of spectators, who are enthralled by the sinister Sexy presentation of the arena rock carnival of misinformation.
I think my favorite part in this covert musical kick in the jaw is an element that’s slightly more subtle. The only word that’s sung more than “Jesus” in this song is “Right”. Though it’ssaid, in every context of the word, the political implications of it are what leaves the sour but important bad taste in your mouth. I can’t go back in time and feel the original the intent and original of this song. I didn’t hear it till years later and had honestly forgot about it. but with the delivery of that one word ghost has re-programmed this song to be a expose for today, While it’s original birthday, remind us that the more things change the more they stay the same.
Despite the conceptual heaviness, the frenetic pace of the video and stylized editing manage to retain a wacky levele of fun, That seems to be a staple of the bands delivery method.
Whether it be choreographed dancing, or prepubescent proxies of the band, Ghost and the ghouls seem to always add a spoonful of sugar to the dark or important bitter elixir.
In Reality the video is a remake of the original video with a much more raw worldview. This remake is the musical equivalent of Howard Hawks, The thing versus John carpenters. The pitch meeting may have been identical by the actual presentation is unrecognizable.
The Most amazing thing about this act, and this song in particular is the excellence of the performers and Tobias’s composition and lyrics are so strong and so well put together that the band never flips into novelty act, or the vaudevillian Las Vegas opulence of a kiss or Alice Cooper. The music can live and die by its own merits, the gimmicks and mythology aren’t extra but a whole other separate layer of incredible creativity.
I highly recommend you check out this video and song . The video is going to kick up to the dust which will help put ghost back in the controversial light. They seem most comfortable and attract the right type of fans to their own Dark Sermon.
According to Rolling Stone, this song is off the upcoming new cover record which features versions of a diverse range of acts spending from iron maiden to Tina Turner.
I for one am excited !
Can I get an amen !!!
