Rambling commentary: She hulk episode one

 She-Hulk: Attorney at Law : episode 1

Official synopsis:

“Jen Walters' world is turned upside down after a freak accident leaves her with superpowers. However, Jen is hesitant to become a full time superhero and tries to maintain her life as a lawyer.”

“*intro*

This already feels like “she hulk” from the outset. It also seems like a court show from the outset , I like that .. it makes it different!! The episode starts with our a protagonist practicing her closing statements for an upcoming jury trial.

Her paralegal friend tells her she wants to see her

“ Savage Jen Walters face”

This is  a riff on “ Savage she haulk the title of the original Sheehild comic.

Jennifer breaks the third wall The first time and recognizes that no one is going to pay attention to The law in order type stuff until she discusses the Hulk stuff.

*cousina car ride*

From there we jump back in time and she’s on a car ride with her cousin Bruce Banner! Great banter Mark Ruffalo is very underrated in his comedic timing. 

As they are driving discussing the sex life of Captain America,  A flying saucer of some sort appears and the duo swerved off the road.

So who knew “hulks”  were contagious!?! This is different from the comic but I am totally here for it! It’s a bit clunky even by comic book science, but I do like this more than just a blood transfusion, which is how Jennifer got hulked in the comics. Jens wound and Bruce’s Wound touch can we get something slightly more Body horror in the sense of the disease Passed along like a blood-borne virus. A situation that no one had any agency in and anyone other than the hulk cousin probably would’ve died of radiation poisoning instantly! Love it!

“Jenn is lost”

Jennifer is her self Lost in the word squishy comes across a bar. In the bar we get some funny humor from some well-meaning ladies cohabitating the women’s room with her!

Outside she gets harassed by some bumpkins.. they will regret that!

We don’t get a good look at she hulk at first but we do get to lickety-split transformations but we don’t see that aftermath!

“Back with Bruce and his smart stuff”

Before too long f her cousin finds her and we end up back at his house/secret lab! 

During their conversation, We get to find out what Bruce was doing during the “blip” And at least a hint of how he became 

Peter David smart professor hulk.

“Test 1”

So they’re really leaning into the zombie sort of thing in regards to hulk blood being dangerous. 

As the trailer showed we’re getting a “kick boxer” meets “the fly” style training sequence.

the CG looks much better than it did in the commercial. Much better in fact. 

It is a bit Jerky sometimes like it seems to move weird but she hulks face doesn’t even look like CG!  Her face looks like something else.,, almost like a real person in make up enhanced by computers . it doesn’t have the kind of animated look that banner has! 

It looks great! Her face rendering certainly makes up for some of the overall character CGI!

“Wakes up”

In the scene where she hulk is awakened by an airhorn I think she’s wearing a black cat rescue shirt..

“Training”

I was worried that this training stuff was going to be multiple episodes in flashback but it looks like we’re sailing right along.

Hulk seems to throw a rock into the atmosphere which is some DC hero level bullshit.TOOO STRONG! 

I like that Jen is better….stronger… faster

“Good times in hard times “

Stupid sophomore burp gags mixed with some legit sentimental stuff. Detective bit of hero worship from Banner in stock but it’s nice that they spend so much time together. Though the timeline kinda confuses me wasnt Tony lost in space? I’ll have to go back and check that out.

“She’s leaving”

Just as I was thinking that Bruce is either passing his guilt along to somebody else or quite frankly just lonely Jennifer calls him on his bullshit. I can see this speech being a target hours shitty cock wielding trolls… but it’s 100% things I’ve heard from women super close to me..

Then we get a big Marvel comics style brawl! This is the best of both worlds here! She hulk Vs Hulk A+++ stuff!!

Even though the trailer spoiled it we see her first breaking before fourth wall!! I love it!

“Courtroom Meyhem” 

think this is titania… “

I really love how awesome she hulk is when she she hulk channeling her whole physical self  into a more analytical calculated combat over just a RAW force

Stick around after the credits there is a payoff of a show long gag and it’s awesome and hilarious!

*Closing Thoughts* 

I Dig it! 

Director Kat Coiro and Writer/producer Jessica Gao are firing on all gamma radiated cylinders! 

Tatiana Maslany is awesome. Thus far this is another out of the park performance by someone on one of these marvel television shows! 

This performance stands proudly along with the entire cast of Moon Knight and Hailee Steinfeld and Alaqua Cox from Hawkeye!

I highly recommend this! 

Marvel ability to do different kind of programs all within their shared universe will undoubtedly prove to be transformative for television in general. The fact that the shared univers in question is played out amongst animated shows streaming television shows and feature films is pretty amazing if you take a second to step back and think about it.

This is another great addition to this innovative (yet incredibly flawed
