first cut:
I’ve been wanting to watch this for years… I think I first heard about it on the Cult Of Muscle podcast. I know the Director mostly by reputation and I’ve never played the video game so I’m not sure why this movie has lived rent free in my head for so long. I meant to cover it last year. Maybe the fact that there was a Video game at all is what intrigued me Or maybe I’m just chasing the dragon looking for Asian Horror cinema that affected me in the way that things like “boxers omen” “house” in the works of Miike did, Whatever the reason, let’s freaking do this thing!!

The Good… The Bad …and the Spooky
The good
The flick looks great all around! The sets, the use of lights the ambiguous Costume design that makes This flick looks timeless. I really have to highlight the light, though the sunlight pouring through the windows, reminds me of a more muted total eclipse of the heart video It also reminds me of heroic Trio, which I like quite a bit. If forced to make a comparison, it would be something fairly contradictory. Sweet home looks like a a mix of one of fulchis gates of hell movies and a hammer film bled dry of all. The color. It almost looks like a color version of a volutin flick but it’s very Japanese too… I know that makes no sense, but what do you expect from me?
The sound design is incredible
That fucking baby!!!
I really like the tonal whiplash this film presents to you. You get the madcap elements of the score some flat out, Don Knotts era slapstick, and then we jump right to Talk of burnt babies and a characters, descent into possessed madness. Even the back-and-forth of spooky dread inducing, supernatural, shenanigans, jumping to super gory stuff. It sneaks in some old timey action beats and did I mention a gent in a Dr. jones SR cosplay performs, a solemn musical number! This flick keeps you on your toes.
All the characters get equal time, so when somebody gets knocked off, you’re not only invested in them, they feel like the main character
Holy shit, that fucking baby!
Considering when this was released… Heck, even taking that out of account, this movie has some banging visual effects. Super innovative, I’m not 100% sure if they were done in Camera on that day or some of it was some kind of animation but so friggin cool. and on a more visceral level, that fucking baby is a nightmare!
The bad
Not only does the cameraman knock over some sort of gravestone/totem with a skull on top of it. He uses the skull to bust open the basement door. I’ve seen a lot of stupid things in horror, movies and a lot of stupid people. but that was the stupidest move since stupid came to stupid town!
There are some incredibly antiquated gender politics at the heart of the story that are at times wince inducing
The spooky
That fucking baby! But really the horror in this movie worked for me. There is almost too much to list. I think the villains make up was amazing. Very scary.
I love the scene where the darkness is crawling down the hall and lightbulbs are bursting and stuff. It’s really cool and really effective.

The Death Rattle
I loved this movie. There’s not much to not like about it and I can’t believe that it hasn’t seen the light of day. One of the big boutique labels needs to jump on this (arrow video seems like a natural pic) while the backwards misogyny is on point for Japan, at the time, and certainly no better or worse than the male gaze that was All the rage in the United States. At the time, it’s still knocks this flick down a peg.
What doodles thought she loved it!!
My weasel Dooley star rating ****1/2
Would I buy it? I want it soooo bad!!
Some one please please please put this out!
