first cut
The VHS box for this flick was in every horror section of every video store. I ever went in as a kid. I was reminded of it when vinegar syndrome recently put out a nice looking jacked up version of it. And now it’s on Shudder I feel like this movie is haunting me, so I better watch it.

The Good… The Bad …and the Spooky
The good
I feel like the POV of the lamp was later plagiarized for Wishmaster. I like it in That flick and I like it here. I’ve gotta admit, I am super into the mechanics of the lamp as a whole. I really like the turning hand with a ruby in it, Uncorks itself by spinning, open by itself.
This film takes place in a world where delta 88’s full of rogue, new wavers, try to commit road warrior style Vehicular homicide in rush-hour traffic… And then commit assault in a busy school hallway And I’m totally here for it.
There is a scene where the English teacher shows up with a stick to beat up the new wave, mail, contempts, and then cut to her teaching her class about Dracula! This is the coolest school ever!
There is a mummy attack and everything about it is ducking rad
Ok animatronic genie puppet is also awesome Very Harryhausen
Andra St. Ivanyi Who plays the genies avatar Alex is quite good. (at least comparatively speaking). I’m surprised she hadn’t done more on the business end of a camera. She’s also a lot easier on the eyes than Bob Englund or Andy Divoff
The gore is quiet good
The bad
The acting… If I may be so misleading to call it that… Well kids it’s really bad really really bad.
The kids stay overnight in a museum and have sexy time. Roughly translated; they deserve everything that happens to them.
There are a bunch of visual effects that would look more at home in the Disney Sunday night movie then at a slasher flick
One thing that really bothers me is there is a rape scene that is immediately followed by the perpetrators being murdered the different server under a minute makes me feel like this wasn’t here to show how for exploitation alone. Not that attempted rape is a cinematic treat but the way it played out just seemed extra mean and twice as sleazy.
The spooky
Have I ever told you about my fundamental fear of weird young people in old people make up. The uncanny valley of A human face that is not an actual human face, scares the crap out of me. While this wasn’t necessarily an intentional scare, it definitely stuck with me.
πππππππππππππ
Sinister superlatives
Best kill: face to face ax
Best Scare: the ol The cobra up the pant leg
Best actor : Andra St. Ivanyi
Best character: the new wave malcontents
Best quote: “ Son, do you wanna know the meaning of the term blacks power? If so, I’ll wipe the floor with your ugly face. l”
ππππππππππππ
The Death Rattle
This is a nightmare in elm street knock off That cribs from all the titles on either side of it at the video store.
Evil dead
Phantasm
Class of 1999
The gate
Just to name a few
For better or worse, it’s lacking all of the wisecracking Bad guy stuff that was all the rage around now in fact, this thing isn’t just humorless it’s downright grim. This wasn’t necessarily a bad time, but it also wasn’t a great time. It wasn’t mean enough or brutal enough Or sleazy enough to be Grind house Exploitation end it wasn’t fun or clever enough to be a bubble gum slasher. There just wasn’t anything cohesive to link the really good parts together. It just sort of existed.
This film’s biggest sin is not capitalizing on the mythology of it’s Monster. It really dropped the ball that would not too awful long after be picked up by Wishmaster.
I wouldn’t skip this one it delivers the goods were a lot of its contemporaries Just tease. It’s not bad it’s just incredibly indecisive.
That said, I will probably try to track down the vinegar syndrome, desk to learn a little more about this wish – E – washy VHS era oddball
What doodle thought: She was pretty indifferent. Sometimes a noisy flick will get her attention. Some of the flashing lights caught her eye
My Dave Meltzer style star rating***
Would I buy it: I regret not picking up the vinegar syndrome. Copy I’m toying with the idea of getting all slashers. I can get my hands on and I have a pretty nice collection of those. Hopefully I can pick this up down the line on the cheap!
