“The Sadness”
- Edgelord. If I felt like I could write that 13 times I would because it permeates every element of this production
- The Gore. This is a new level everything in this looks incredible Even and I turned away sometimes and I’ve seen it all! This is great great stuff
- All mean no substance. This would’ve been my favorite movie when I was 14 years old but there’s nothing to the main characters there’s nothing to the supporting characters everyone is just props for shitty mean things to happen.
- The actual Infection. “The sadness” , it’s pretty cool. Basically everyone turns into the Joker and indulges in every fetishist violent bloodsoaked wet dream they ever had.
- “The crossed comparison”. At face value the “outbreak“ and it’s infected are very similar to Garth Ennis incredible horror comic. But where this is nasty set piece after nasty set piece the avatar comics opus is full of quiet moments and characters who you actually worry about or hate.
- “The explanation” honestly I’m indifferent to the The narrative choices between the scientific pandemic or the mysterious affliction. Either way is OK with me as long as the story is good. But I’d trade that whole last set piece and all of its exposition for a bit more character development for our two leads.
- The typical people are as bad as the monsters cliché. Between what I talked about in Number six and the addition of this old zombie film chest nut…. It’s like he built his film on a “how to make a zombie movie kit”
- The running time! An hour and 40 minutes is not long especially by contemporary cinematic standards but if it was cut down to 88 minutes we might have a classic on our hands. I’ve always believed 88 minutes equals the perfect pop movie and carving 10 or so minutes off this thing definitely would’ve lessened the drag of its overall nastiness.
- Speaking of things that I would’ve cut out I have zero complaints about the scene where the government announcement goes wrong but I feel like within the narrative it definitely slowed things down. That WOULD BE A GOOD WAY to open a sequel.
- The beginning of the outbreak! Holy shit this was one of the best opening outbreaks of any film since the “Dawn of the Dead” remake! It’s super intense has some scary stuff and the effects are great.
- While the characters are just vessels to get us from place to place of all the zombie outbreak plot contrivances the old disaster movie standard of “ having to get a crossed a crazy happenstance of biblical proportions to rescue/Reunite my special person” is easily my favorite. I have nightmares of not being able to get to my people in times of disaster. This may not be the best instance of this plot device but it definitely hit you in the “ I empathize with your plight”
- The Sad? The people with the “sadness” Can we just talk about the hag like thing in The Restaurant?!? Brilliant make up! Soo gross!
- Some of the infected are Super Gross! In like a good way. I hah thing in the restaurant at the beginning.. The deranged neighbor! The best of all is the “business man”. He’s like a snake who lashes out suddenly unpredictably! Through a great deal of the film he’s like a shadow, a specter of death just a few steps behind our heroin. While the incredibly repulsive hag may end up being the most iconic monster from this film The significantly less outrageous but equally outstanding businessman is definitely going to be the most memorable to anyone who’s watched the film
